What the values mean
WCAG 2.1 AA — the basis of the BFSG — requires at least 4.5 : 1 for normal text and at least 3 : 1 for large text and controls. AAA is the stricter level.
We don't store any of your input: the tool runs entirely in your browser, nothing is sent to us — and everything is deleted as soon as you close the tab.
The checker only assesses colour contrast using the WCAG 2.1 formula. A passing contrast does not mean your website as a whole is accessible or BFSG-compliant. No warranty.
Frequently asked questions
What contrast does WCAG require?
At least 4.5 : 1 for normal text and at least 3 : 1 for large text and controls (level AA). AAA requires 7 : 1.
Does this apply to the BFSG too?
Yes. Via the standard EN 301 549, the BFSG refers to WCAG 2.1 level AA — which includes these contrast values.
How do I find my website's colour codes?
With the eyedropper in the tool (Chrome, Edge) straight from the screen — or ask your web agency for the colour codes.
