Good to know

  • The rate only covers your costs if you actually bill the billable hours — travel and small jobs count.
  • Charge materials on top, usually with a surcharge for purchasing, storage and warranty.
  • Compare the result with the rates of your guild or chamber.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate an hourly rate?

All costs of a year — wages with employer costs, overheads and your own salary — divided by billable hours, plus a surcharge for profit and risk.

Why are billable hours so much lower than paid hours?

Holidays, public holidays, sickness, travel, set-up time and admin are paid but not billed. Of 2,080 paid hours, often only 1,300–1,500 are billable.

What is a typical hourly rate in the trades?

It depends heavily on trade, region and business size. What matters is that the rate covers your own costs — your guild or chamber has comparison figures.
